A note from the ASCC Technical Committee

Bemotrizinol (Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, or BEMT, CAS No. 187393-00-6) is a broad spectrum sunscreen active with absorbance in the UVA (343nm) and UVB (310nm) regions.

On 9 June 2026, the US FDA approved this UV active for use in sunscreen formulations at a maximum permitted level of 6% w/w. It is also recognised by the FDA as GRASE (Generally Regarded as Safe and Effective.) It is the first UV active to be approved by the FDA since 1999.

Formulators and marketers may now include this material in sunscreen products intended to be marketed in the USA.

It is currently approved in Australia at 10% w/w.
