A note from the ASCC Technical Committee
4-Methylbenzylidene Camphor (4-MBC, Enzacamene, CAS No, 36861-47-9) is a UV filter active in the UVB region, with a peak absorbance at 300 nm.
Due to concerns about endocrine disruption, this material has, as of 1 May 2026, been banned in the EU and will be banned by the UK in January 2027. It is also currently under review by the TGA.
It is currently approved in Australia at a maximum level of 4% w/w.
Brands formulating for the EU market will need to ensure that their sunscreens are compliant with the new EU regulations.
