The International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists, IFSCC, organises an internationally recognised Congress every 2 years. The next congress is due to be held in 2016. Competition to speak at these Congresses is very high and as a result an excellent standard of papers is maintained. Attendance at the Congress ranges from 1500 to 2000 delegates.
In the years between Congresses the IFSCC holds a Conference. This is a smaller event but in recent years the scientific standard has increased to the extent that a number of awards have been introduced to maintain the scientific standard.
The IFSCC encourages member societies to be involved in all activities of the IFSCC. There are 2 main measures of participation – numbers of individual members as well as the scientific contribution of member societies. Of particular importance is presentation of scientific information at the IFSCC Congress. Currently the IFSCC is considering restructuring the Praesidium so that representation is governed by measuring the aforementioned measures of participation.
Australia has always had a relatively high number of members and ranks 7th according to numbers. When scientific contribution is taken into account Australia ranks 17th out of 20. While the level of company-based research in Australia is small relative to USA, Europe and Japan, there is still significant research undertaken in Australia that is applicable to Cosmetics. Australia is a recognized leader in research into the effects of excessive sun exposure as well as development of products to reduce harmful effects of sun exposure. Often this research is conducted in Universities, Research Institutes or small companies and a barrier to presenting scientific work on the international stage is the cost of attending overseas conferences.
To encourage research in Australia and New Zealand and participation in the IFSCC the ASCC has established the ASCC Travel Award and the ASCC will pay airfares and accommodation for a speaker to attend an IFSCC Congress or Conference.
